USE OF BIO FERTILISER IN SRI

Bio fertilizers are now considered to be better than chemical fertilizer. Additional nitrogen requirement of paddy and other such plants can be met from bio fertilizers like Azola. In paddy cultivation using SRI method in Kanakpur (SRI village), Azola has been applied in the paddy fields. The azola applied is grown up in every 10 -12 days and is mixed into soil by weeding. Then in another 10-12 days, the residue of the Azola is grown up again. It has been calculated that it adds about 30 kg of nitrogen to the growing paddy in one acre.

SRI VILLAGE KANAKPUR

SRI Village – Kanakpur, District-Kalahandi 2009

Most of the farmers in Kanakpur have grown the variety MTU-1010 under SRI. Except a few every one has used only organic manure and for pest control they are using magic compost (handi khata) along with few indigenous techniques. Thabira Budhia who is one of the progressive farmers transplanted the seedlings which were of 9 days old. However in spite of that, most of the hills have 70 to 80 tillerings and in few cases the number is as high as 120. In this  picture Thabira holds one plant which is having 120 tillerings! (Pic. Susheel Gahir, SVA).

SRI Village Pendrawan, District-Nuapada

In village Pendrawan of Nuapada district most of the SRI farmers have grown ‘Nabin’ variety which is of longer duration than MTU-1010 or Lalat. The Pendrawan MIP authority released the water late for which the transplantation was delayed and also there has been shortage of water for many fields since April, 2009.

In spite of erratic water supply and shortage of water the farmers who have taken moderate care have got bumper crop and their joy knows no bound. In the above picture Mrs. Tulasha Rana sowing the bumper crop of her plot. The paddy plants have grown as high as 4 ft. 6 inches. Tulasha has used only farm yard compost as well as dropping of crane collected from the nearby forest and magic compost. Tulasha says it was beyond her imagination that with very little investment she would see such an amazing crop in her field.

Govinda Pradhan of village Chahagaon, District-Kalahandi sowing the Lalat variety grown under SRI using irrigation from the LI point in river Tel. IN the village Chahagaon (Kalahandi) ten farmers have taken up SRI this year. But two of them who used hybrid seeds have miserably failed. They do not expect even 10 qtls of paddy per acre in spite of use of heavy doses of chemical fertilizer and pesticide.
